‘In a Vase on Monday’ is hosted by Rambling in the Garden – oh my goodness what a lovely subject to share! My vase (jug, made in Italy and bought 25 years ago or more in Honiton, Devon) contains Aquilegia, Sweet Cicely, the last of the Pheasant Eye Narcissi, Forget-me-nots and one of my all-time favourites – Cerinthe 
Oh how I love this plant! It self-seeds, survives the winter and seems to be happy in most places in my garden. The vase is sitting on a shawl knitted by my Mum (now 86). I would so love to have taken this arrangement to her in her Care Home, but sadly she has dementia and anything you take her, only seems to add to her anxiety and distress. So, instead I took it to a friend who is having a very stressful time at the moment – and I only thought of doing this after the prompt of seeing ‘In a Vase on Monday’ – blogland spreading the love!!!

What a pretty white vase for your lovely collection of blooms – I love the effect of all the cerinthe and I am hopeful I will be including them in a vase this year soon too. There are so many different ‘side-effects’ of the meme, relating to the vase, the blooms, the props or something less tangible, as you have found yourself, and it certainly succeeded in prompting me to pick flowers from the garden regularly, which was the original idea. It’s a beautiful creation and it’s kind of you to share it with your friend. Coincidentally, I used Aquilegia and Cerinthe in my vase this week too, although these flowers are past their prime in my garden where summer is pushing spring to the side.

Thank you Kris. It has been so cold here recently that Spring is only just getting going. I love the way both Aquilegia and Cerinthe seed themselves and look after themselves.

Thank you for your kind words. As I look at the arrangement now, in the photo, I want to lower the narcissi heads, but at the time I was wanting to reproduce the heights at which each flower grows in the garden.
Dementia is such a cruel disease, the good thing is that the Home is lovely with a really nice garden to sit in, and the staff are all very kind.

A very pretty arrangement of your flowers. Sorry to read about your Mum, mine is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. So sad to see the effect on loved ones. I am sure your friend loved them.

Thank you Cathy, it is nice to see them in a vase as actually my garden is a mess!!! Ha Ha! So it is great to have the best bits distilled into something pleasing on the eye.
Alzheimers is so cruel and so unpredictable, I wish you and your Mum well, not an easy road to travel.

Thank you Edwina for your appreciative response. My Mum did so much wonderful knitting and this shawl was in very fine wool, knitted as a circular Christening Shawl for my daughter about 33 years ago. Dementia is cruel, and it is hard, but she is well looked after and is happy enough in her own crazy world. I’ve been meaning to go and see my friend for a while now, and the ‘In a Vase…’ gave me just the little extra nudge I needed to fit the visit into my day.
