This photo is of the amazing font at Salisbury Cathedral, designed by William Pye

Back in February, I took Miss E on a ‘school trip’, mainly to see the exhibition of Sophie Ryder wire sculptures,DSC_0734

but the day held so much more….

Miss E immediately engaged with the huge beingsDSC_0738

in both a thoughtful and playful way

…..talking about how they might have been made and looking for the baby hare

She was fascinated by the quirky things she found in the sculptures

and started making a collection of photos of ‘unusual things’.

Totally unprompted by me, she responded to many of the sculptures by adopting the same poses and then interacting with them … I could see she was not only seeing the forms, she was feeling them in her body and becoming part of them.

She danced with the dancing hares…

and stood strong under the ‘clasped hands’. This structure was originally over the path but had to be moved as people were bumping into it whilst walking, heads down, texting on their mobile phones!

Inside the cathedral Miss E talked about the scale of the huge sculptures and marvelled at the scale of the cathedral, again wondering about how it had been constructed,

noticing the richness of its history and the patterns and shapes.

We had such an enriching day together, and only just made it back in time for Miss E to get to her gymnastics class.

  3. What a lovely time you had together! Those sculptures are beautiful! The clasped hands are stunning. But that font, wow, I’ve never seen one like that before – just beautiful.

  4. I’m never ceased to be amazed by the artistic abilities of others. The baby hare inside the larger hare is so cool! What a blessing you two are to each other and the time you have together is educational and enriching. The world is your classroom!

  9. Lovely! The haiku(s) and the reflective photos. Sweet little Miss E, so nice that she has such an early interest in the arts. And how lucky that you live close to your grands, to share such meaningful times.

  10. Oh thank you for showing us the hare sculptures, Sandra – I had recently Googled them but could not find many images so was thrilled to see your pictures. What a delightful day you had and such an enriching experience for you both. Here is my haiku:

  15. Amazing font. I haven’t been to Salisbury cathedral for many, many years, obviously a lot has changed. Last time I went was when they had introduced turnstiles and you had to pay while Winchester cathedral did not and I thought they were a money grubbing lot! As a religious person I don’t believe that you should ‘have to’ pay to visit a church. I used to pop into Winchester cathedral for a few minutes peace most times I went to Winchester before they started charging too. I don’t go often enough to make it worth paying their yearly charge!

  20. We visited Salisbury cathedral last year and that font is incredible. I found it very hard to take a picture that did it justice. I really like your photograph.

    • It’s so great to know you have been there as well Cathy. I agree with you, it is hard to take a good photo, I think it is because being in it’s presence and feeling the size and sensing the water surface and hearing the sound of the water falling can not be photographed can it. I’m glad you like my photo, but I too don’t feel it does the Font justice.
