My son-in-law caught his new duck-down filled jacket on a barbed wire fence and asked if I could mend it. An AWKWARD thing to mend.
But mothers-in-law come in useful at times. First I did a herringbone stitch to keep the edges stable. I got a piece of bias binding folded and sewed it into a right-angle and then hem stitched it onto the jacket, being careful not to go through to the lining beneath.
I was pretty pleased with the result – and so was my son-in-law!
This is my entry for our ‘One-a-Week’ Photo Challenge, which goes live each Tuesday.
All the weeks’ prompts are listed below so you can be looking out for the subjects. I like to get a few sitting in my drafts, as life can suddenly get busy at times.
Have you found anything AWKWARD recently – or maybe you have an AWKWARD photo in your archive. Cathy of Nanacathy and I created the list for fun, Rainbow Jane created the graphics for us – feel free to add any prose or poetry if the prompt inspires and leave a link in the comments below. It is always inspiring to see the variety of responses each prompt brings forth.
Next week’s subject is
GATE.

Brilliant job! I’m quite awkward at mending, so could never have come up with such a nice, tidy solution.

Thanks Jen – now you will be able to do the same should the need arise. 😉

What great satisfaction you must have felt upon completing such a super job on indeed a very awkward repair. I’ve never been in search of awkward before but it’s an interesting way to look at things throughout the day!

I do get satisfaction from mending, esp when it turns out well. I think my s-i-l was very surprised at the result.
I love the way our photo challenge causes us to look at things in a slightly different way and the different interpretations are always a fun mix.

And an awkward moment for him when he ripped it no doubt.

Yes, Denis, and for his friend who was supposed to be holding the fence up for hi as he climbed through – I think the air was blue around them for a few minutes!!!

Thank you wild daffodil!! ☺ Yes, for me awkward has always meant embarassing 😛 so I interpreted the prompt this way 😆😂

Great job! I’m looking forward to next week’s entry, as gates are one of my favourite things!

Thank you Valerie. Will you join us! I expect you have some great ‘gate’ shots. I’m hoping you will enjoy the one I have in mind for my entry – thinking I might post it on the Hidden Curiosities page as well. 😉

I might have one or two shots, but I’m not sure they’re postworthy. 🙂 I’ve always loved the hidden possibilities of gates and stairways, doors and windows. What lies beyond them? Where do they lead? This has inspired me to get out there and photograph some picturesque examples!

Yes, me too …. what lies beyond ….. a delicious mystery. Yippeee! I hope to see some or your examples! 😉

I was very impressed (and a bit envious that I couldn’t have done it without making a mess)!!! 🙂

Ha ha! and you would have written about the mess you made so brilliantly and had us rocking with mirth! 😉

Thanks Daffy. I really hope I would have done! 🙂

Good job done there, Sandra. Younger Daughter is the one who will ask me to do alterations or new zips whilst Elder Daughter will do it herself and quite possibly more neatly than me as she is a perfectionist!

I’m not good at zips, so I’m impressed! I started in my teens as a perfectionist and used to get frustrated and disappointed, then children came along and things had to be done quickly or not at all – the enjoyment returned – now it’s the quickest way for me. This new jacket did require a bit more attention though.

Interesting how our attitudes change over the years, isn’t it? Although no perefectionist, I am more likely these days to redo something I am disatisfied with than I was when I first started sewing

Yes, as you say, interesting the way life’s twists and turns affect our attitudes and responses to all sorts of things.

What a lovely poetic comment Laurie! Thank you. 🙂
There is a Permaculture saying “the problem is the solution” which takes some thinking about but is often a useful thing to think about when creating any design.

That is a beautiful mend indeed. Mending was something I was very good at for my ‘O’ level needlework. Sadly, it isn’t practiced nearly enough these days. Good play on words too!

I’ve got good at darning, but I find fabric much more of a challenge… that’s part of the reason I’ve started to explore visible mending… at least I can claim that it’s supposed to be seen!
