Playful Butterfly

DSC_0191When I took Little Miss M and Little Bro to the park, after school yesterday, there was a Red Admiral butterfly that seemed to want to play with them. It kept fluttering back to them, around their heads, landing near to them: on posts, the grass and the climbing net – this went on for at least 10 minutes – it even landed on Little Bro’s arm at one point.

A school friend joined in and all three were first chasing, then leaping and dancing around with delight, then creeping up slowly and at one point the butterfly was on a post and all three were putting a finger on the post edging closer to the butterfly to see if it would hop on, totally focussed on that moment when time seemed to stand still.

Magical, utterly magical.
But – did I have my camera with me – no!
A beautiful memory to hold in my mind’s eye.
As I was writing this I remembered that over 25 years ago, when I was doing a City and Guilds Embroidery course, there was a competition

to create a greetings card with butterflies as the theme.
(apologies for the quality of the photos, something has gone wrong with my ‘Photos’ programme and I am unable to do any editing – so far long phone calls to Apple, whilst they have tried to sort it out – with more to come)

We had to show our folder of workings as well (click on any photo to see it bigger)

and after much experimentation, this was the card I submitted into the competition, it has lost a few star sequins

Well – I won!

It is the only competition I have ever won, so I’ve kept that folder dear to me and never used the cards – I’m wondering if I should send them now and let go ………..

……………   No, I can’t just yet.

Have you ever won a competition? Or danced with a butterfly in the park?

  1. Your work is beautiful – it’s no surprise that you won! I haven’t ever won a competition – I once won a Blue Peter Competition runners up badge (which I was immensely proud of!). I haven’t ‘danced’with butterflies in the park but I have chased them as a child – needless to say they were so flighty I never got near them!

    • Thank you!
I’ve never seen a butterfly stick around for so long and keep coming back for more – my daughter-in-law is convinced it is one of our dear departed relatives come back to play with the children – nice thought – I wonder who?

    • 😉 I love the way that haiku has become a way of life for you – that is very inspiring Denis. I’m going to be looking at the world through haiku eyes, and not just on a Monday/Tuesday.

  6. Beautiful! Easy to see why it won. No, I’ve never entered a competition, and certainly not for my drawing. 😉

  7. Congratulations, it is lovely. I do like butterflies.it must be wonderful to be able to draw!
You could say my daughter won a competition for me. When she started at secondary school they had a fancy dress competition and for the first time in my life I actually tried to think what might win her the competition. In the end I took some large sheets of card and made a computer key board (3D buttons) and a screen to be worn at the front and a large 3D switch on the card for the back, I included some words about being a robot teacher. And yes, she won. I was so pleased.

    • Brilliant! Well done. Sounds amazing.
My Mum used to make the most amazing fancy dress costumes and so we often won prizes. For our local Carnival parade when I was about 11, I was dressed as ‘Fry’s Turkish Delight’, sitting on my pony in a bikini covered with organza top and harem pants and a big jewel stuck in my belly button! Ha!
