Yarn Along is Back!

jurassic coast crochet blanket

I am ridiculously excited about the return of Ginny’s Yarn Along, I’ve missed it.

Now appearing monthly rather than weekly. I love Ginny’s blog, the photographs are superb as she shares with us her tales of knitting, dyeing, making and family life in such a gentle, honest way. I often read her posts several times and wonder at her photography – if only I could take such beautiful photos.

Whilst I wait for Attic24’s Woodland CAL to start (eeeeek – only two more days!) I have been working on a blanket for my nephew. It is in a nice relaxing linen stitch that I can do in front of the TV or whilst watching the children play, giving me a rest from the intricacies of the mandalas I’ve been making recently.

I joined in with Lucy’s Moorland Cal last year, but chose Dorset Hedgerow colours for the blanket I gave to my niece, DSC_0608she is training to be a vet and loves the Dorset Countryside.

Her brother was quick to mention how much he also loves to curl up on the sofa with a blanket, so what to make for Harry? When I think of him I think of surfing and the sea, and we do live on the World Heritage Jurassic Coast so…….

I gathered a Coastal Palette togetherjurassic coast colours

Using Stylecraft Special DK and Stylecraft Batik in the hope that I can blend some of the stripes together.

Ginny asks us to share a book we are reading along with our yarny projects – and synchronicity! – I am currently reading a book about the life of Mary Anning, one of our local heroines.

I have been making a few little ammonites using Eleonora’s cute pattern . I have made them so that I can play around with working out the order of the stripes.

  1. Just to let you know, in case you hadn’t seen, I featured your mandalas on Ginx Woolly Linx https://ginxcraft.blogspot.co.uk/2018/01/ginx-woolly-linx-party-february.html

  2. I love the colours you have chosen for the coastal palette, and the idea of making little ammonites while reading a book on Mary Anning is very apt. I am speechless on your mandalas – they are just so intricate and beautiful. Mini works of art.

    • Thank you for your lovely comment Ginny. I thank the newly found world of crochet tutorials for the mandalas – I would never have done them without my friend You Tube!
I popped over to your blog – I love all your little knitted items – Blogspot won’t let me leave a comment for some annoying reason.

I love those amonites! My seven year old wants to be a paleontologist when he grows up, we are excited about the Mary Anning biopic coming out this year. Is your book biography or historical fiction?

    • Hi Elizabeth, the book is historical fiction. I have really enjoyed some of Tracy Chevalier’s other books, but I am a little disappointed with this one. I know Lyme Regis very well and I was hoping to feel more of the place in the book. It has left me wanting to know more about Mary Anning though and gives an interesting description of how these fossils were received at the time.
What a wonderful ambition your son has – all best wishes for his quest.

  7. You picked very pretty colors for your blanket. What is Remarkable Creatures about?

    • Thank you Deborah. The book is about the life of Mary Anning who was the girl who found fossils of ammonities and other pre-historic creatures in the cliffs around Lyme Regis on the South Coast of England in the early 1800s. If you click on her name in the post it will take you to more information about her.

    • Thank you Cathy. I’ll write out all the colours in sequence when it’s finished – although goodness knows when that will be as it will have to go back in the WIP box once I start Lucy’s Woodland CAL.

You have my permission to adopt me. I love those blues you are using to make Harry’s blanket. 😉 Of course I love the Dorset Countryside too.

  18. The woodland CAL nearly makes me want to crochet, but I better stick with the knitted blanket I am working on, and it does have sort of a woodland feel to the colors. Are you doing the coastal color way for the CAL, or did I misunderstand. Either way, those colors are so soothing. I love blues!

    • I will be using the Woodland Colours for the CAL. I’ve no idea who or what it will be for once made, I only know I so enjoyed being part last year’s CAL, I want to join in again. Sometimes I do wish I could be more sensible (like you Kathy!) and not rush into yet another project but the impetus to do this one will not be quelled!

  21. Isn’t Ginny’s blog so beautiful? Even though I am not specifically working on a project due to trying to get healrth back together, I love seeing what everyone is working on and reading.

I am amazed at the level of evolution crochet seems to have gone through since I did it all the time a few decades agio and was considered quaint and outdated since I was young then. These multi-level mandalas are just so lovely–enjoy!

    • Her blog really is beautiful – how does she get her photos to look so soft and yet in focus?! I know what you mean about the evolution of crochet – I have only recently discovered the joys of surface designs and video tutorials – WOW!
May 2018 bring you good health and crafting time.
