Yesterday was Mother’s Day here in the UK. A belated Happy Mother’s Day to everyone who is a mother or can celebrate their own Mother. I know it can be a difficult day for some and I never take for granted just how lucky I am. Love and hugs to all. ❤
My Mother’s Day celebrations started on Friday when my daughter A took me out to lunch at my favourite local eaterie ‘Feed the Soul’ in Godmanstone.
That’s Nick preparing our matcha green teas with great care and panache – he co-runs the restaurant with his sister who creates the most beautiful and delicious vegetarian and vegan foods.
A had a matcha latte with oat milk, I had a plain matcha.
And look, my nail varnish matched the pottery – I love little moments of serendipity like that.
We took a while to decide what to have as everything is so good. The soup of the day was Pea Soup and I was very tempted as it was cold and raining outside …..
In the end we both had a Buddha Bowl full of healthy deliciousness and amazing flavours and textures
Let me tell you – those kale crisps were surprisingly gorgeous and oh so tasty!
It was just wonderful and a rare treat to have some quality Mother-and-Daughter time – it felt a bit like my birthday!
I don’t normally go for puddings – but at Feed the Soul they are unmissable!
A chose an apple and ginger square
and I could not resist the Strawberry Cheesecake
I wish I could send you all a piece – Yummmmmmmmmmmmm!
What a lucky Mum I am!
And then on Sunday I was in for a very special Mother-and-Son time, with my Farmer son who lives close by. (not my Marathon Running Son who lives in London) For the first 37 years of my life I lived on a farm as a farmer’s daughter and then a farmer’s wife. My husband and I ran a dairy farm and it is a long time since I was out checking on cows to see if they were about to calve – that’s what I did with my son on Sunday morning – such a wonderful nostalgic trip down memory lane.
First, we looked at the young stock, munching away at their haylage, then after a lovely tour round the farm we went to look at the cows who are all mothers in waiting.
My son had had to help this little one into the world at 5 am that morning
we were pleased to see her up and about and looking lively
she seems to take after her father, Mitch the bull
I was delighted that I seem to have retained my ability to spot a cow that was about to calve. I spotted her on the way in, standing in the midst of the others and by the time we had looked round the other cows she was lying down and had popped out another Mother’s Day calf
The cow got up straight away and started licking the calf …..
there is always an anxious few moments waiting to see if the calf is ok, but just a mintue later it had raised its head and wiggled its ears
and was being visited by the other mums-in-waiting.
The one on the left from A the one on the right from my son, HaHaHa!!!
both with lovely messages inside.
A truly Happy Mother’s Day.

Ha ha, I had a giggle at the card! Glad you had a great day – I spent mine in a hot tub with the girls:)

A family friend had a red sweatshirt years ago with the slogan “ Friesians are foremost” that’s about my level of understanding of cattle despite living amidst dairy farmland here. Your meal looks amazing. Not sure about the matcha though. Glad you had such a lovely day!

It sounds like you had lovely mother’s day weekend. When i was growing up we had milking cows too, just a small herd of never more than eleven cows. I always had my favourites though. In my late teens, my father was happy to sometimes give me the responsiblity of milking
them myself.

Another Dairy Girl!!!
You must still remember some of those wonderful characters.
We had about 180 cows and I knew all of them and their particular foibles. I used to think if you had to be up at 4.30am there was nothing nicer than the company of sweet smelling warm, calm, friendly dairy cows – that was before I had my own babies of course! 😉

180!!! Wow that was one big herd. Yes, Polly was my favourite, an old brown and white shorthorn, though most of ours where Friesians.

My favourite was Mona, who would only stand in one particualr place in the parlour and would do a low, soft moan all the time she was being milked or if you rubbed her on her forehead.
My son-in-law currently has a herd of 400 milking cows plus followers!!! Yikes!!!

It touches me how even though he has so many he still has characters he is especially fond of – and the children Show the calves, so they get very close to them.

This is a lovely post to read first thing in the morning! So very serendipitous that you got to revisit your past life and be among new life on this particular day. I have come to see it is a great compliment to us when our children go out of their way to celebrate us, their mums, on special days. And I love their cards 🙂 I wanted to marry a farmer and be a farmer’s wife when I was very young – obviously pre Women’s Lib days 😀 And I still love life down on the farm even though I never actually got to live it for longer than a week or two at a stretch.

Oh that is so lovely!!! I’m thrilled that you enjoyed this post at the start of your day.
Yes being a ‘Farmer’s Wife’ was pre-women’s-lib days – but it was a definite Job Title in my eyes and I was proud of it. I was co-ordinator and crisis manager in the days before mobile phones – I was at the hub of the wheel and often had to make extremely important decisions with a moment’s notice, caring for all aspects of machinery, staff and livestock and keeping the workforce happy and well-fed!!!!
Not to mention organising the Christmas party and other social morale boosting events throughout the year!
My mother-in-law and I were the epicentre of a large business and we made a great team. I do miss those days – but I gladly miss the paperwork, being at the mercy of the weather and often terrible Government decisions!
Thank you so much for your message, I agree with you whole-heartedly about our children – hurray for them, hurray for us!. ❤ ❤ ❤

What a great day, Sandra! We are both in the sisterhood of dairy girls! I hadn’t realized that before.😍 We had all Holsteins, but my personal cows were Red and Whites. Not a dairy picture, but one of my favorite cow moments, is driving across the prairie in late April, and seeing the baby calves “at school.” The are all sitting in a semi circle around 2 mama cows, while the others are off for a break. Love that! New babies are such a joy, and there’s not many things softer than a new baby snuggled in the straw napping after a it’s been expertly cleaned up by mama and had its colostrum! Happy Mother’s Day to you!

Dairy Girls together! I like that Kathy!!!
We had Friesian cows, and we crossed the heifers with Herefords when I was farming – now my son-in-law has a dairy of Holsteins.
My son’s are all beef animals – all sorts of breeds mixed together.
It never leaves you does it – happy days! ❤ 😉 ❤

Sounds like a great Mother’s weekend! I was expecting a quiet day on my own but in the afternoon my daughter came down all the way from Aylesbury with flowers and baklava (I already had a card) and while she was there my son popped it too with a hand made card and stayed till supper time. He washed the lunch dishes too before he went!
