My Marathon-Running son (age 39) is in the Sahara.
He arrived on the 6th and the photo is of the sun going down over the tents on Friday night, his first night in the desert. It was posted on Facebook by the Marathons des Sable photographers.
He and his team of 5 other Chartered Surveyors are raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
They will be running 6 Marathons in 6days – Whaaaaaaaaat!!! Crazy!
They “will run over 250km (156 miles) through endless dunes, over rocky jebels, and across white-hot salt plains.” A quote from the website.
I am glued to the Marathons des Sables Facebook Page as there are real time videos, photos and interviews – I haven’t seen Ralph yet though.
He will have a GPS tracker on him when he’s running and he tells me I will be able to follow him – a dot on a map – when he is racing.
The wonders of technology.
His first race starts at 9am (10am here) when at last the months of gruelling training is going to be put into practice. I have to admit I have butterflies.
Go Ralph!
Sending good luck to your son. Best wishes

I’m utterly in awe of a challenge like that and so pleased to hear that the first run went well. Here’s hoping the other five (!) are as successful.

I find it incredible, not only that my son is doing it but that there are 977 competitors and some have done it multiple times – there is one French man who has done it 29 times!!!!!
Ralph took 7 and a quarter hours over tough terrain to do 39km today, but he’s sounding quite chipper in his email to the family. All of his team finished – only 9 of the 977 had to withdraw at various stages along the route – absolutely spectacular photos on the Facebook page.
Thank you for your good wishes.

It was great to see a photo of him fresh and elated after the race yesterday – not so nervous today – there is so much coverage on the Marathons des Sables Facbook page, it is like being there without the sand …. and the heat!

Thank you Mrs C. They all came in safely – 39km/24.23 miles tomorrow but he is looking and feeling good, so I’m much less nervous now.

Thank you Claire. Over 50 countries are represented – I can’t quite believe over 1,000 runners put themselves through this.
