I have had difficulty commenting and ‘liking’ posts on other Blogs for a while and now my own site is causing me difficulties.
I think you might be seeing a mass of adverts sprinkled in amongst the text and the comments. I am so sorry if this is the case. Could you let me know if this is happening.
My site is free and I have never felt the need to change it, but I think WordPress might be making things difficult so that I will be forced to pay for a site.
Anyone else having similar issues?
Update: I have noticed that recently there has been NO Spam in my Comments, whereas before there was always quite a lot that WordPress had captured for me to check and delete. That might be why they had to make changes and get everyone to Log In afresh – which makes sense. A courtesy email to explain that would have been good.

Hi Sandra – another reason could be a WordPress plugin that you are using. Check to see if there’s any mention of “ad insertion” or “custom ads” in the theme or plugin descriptions. Hope this helps 🙂

no ads, and I’m using the freebie android app today. usually I use chrome, on ny Windows laptop, and I’ve never noticed any ads there, either

Hope you have it sorted. I don’t see any ads, but I, too, pay the lowest. That way, others don’t see ads on my blog. I really like WP, so the $25 is well worth it.

It seems that everyone’s experience is different and due to their own personal circumstances and settings, I expect things will settle down again soon this end.
I am glad to knoe that the majority of ny readers are not being bombarded with ads in amongst my post and comments.

Wow! That post shows how clever some of my fellow- bloggers are. I haven’t seen ads on your site but have had some issues with wordpress on my free site. I don’t think that the big tech companies are very good at co-operating with each other and why should they; they are in competition! However for us users it makes life difficult. I know that when I first tried to write a blog about 7 years ago I couldn’t use wordpress on my iPad. I think I have Firefox already loaded on this laptop so may try using it and see if it works better – thank you sussurus. I ahve already reported on my own blog that trying to like or comment on my phone (google) or tablet (Amazon) doesn’t always work.

Hi Sandra. If you are using WP for free there will be ads, however ad blocker on computers can block them for readers. I pay for my WP because I ran out of space on the free deal and so there will never be ads coming from WP on my site. However the functionality of my Reader and my liking and saving are problematic and very frustrating. You are spot on about WP fiddling around with functionality. Trying to contact WP is challenging. Good luck.

I access WordPress through my computer, access individual blogs via email notifications and have no difficulties. I see no ads. I have an annual WP account for the past two years – partly as an experiment to see if it would stop people randomly disappearing from my ‘following; list, Which it appears to have done. Now and again WP ‘improves’ something and we all suffer 😀 I do wonder if logging off and logging back in again might help – sometimes it’s the simple solutions that work. Also clearing your cache if you are on computer.

Hi! I click through from your emails. I’m using an iPad and Safari. Sad to say, there are ads interspersed in your blog. I just ignore them. I find this on most of the web pages and blogs I look at. Very annoying. But when the content catches my interest, I persevere.

I just checked and am not seeing adverts on your site. I use a Mac and have had exactly the same problems, caused after a recent software update on my Mac’s operating system. I eventually switched to using Firefox instead of Safari to read and comment on posts, even on my own site! I haven’t signed up for a Firefox account, I have just downloaded the browser.
If I’m using Safari:
I can like and comment in the WordPress Reader, but not always if I’ve clicked through to the actual blog. I don’t know why some sites work and others don’t.
If I am on the actual blog, and find I can’t comment, clicking on the small blue W logo which appears beside the comment box logs me in so I can comment again. Strangely, even after being logged in I still can’t like, so far as I remember.
To stop some websites putting tracking cookies on our machines for ‘bad’ purposes and make our browsing more private, some browsers are preventing cross site tracking or making it difficult (ie if we are signed in on the WordPress Reader, then move to our own or other people’s sites, we are automatically logged out instead of staying logged in as we used to be). I can see this going from bad to worse, but Firefox is working for me, for now. Safari seems to work fine on my iPhone, but whether it will after a few more software updates remains to be seen.
I hope you’ll find something that works for you – it is such an irritating problem!

Afternoon, Lovely! During the year I spent using an ipad and the WP apps, I saw ads on many sites, both when logged in and reading via a browser. Once switched back to computer and logged into the WP site, I was able to locate a second and very different WP page for writing and posting (via WP’s normal Search function).
That page had separate boxes on right side of screen for allowing comments. Once I was able to locate that page consistently and make certain that box was checked, the comments problem disappeared. All of this was done via computer logged into WP site. I have a free account, as noted by the “dot wordpress” portion of the URL (address).
What I don’t know is if this would also have been possible via ipad’s app. Had wasted hours on this and declared ENUFF! 🥺

No adverts here. But I know the adverts are not shown to people who have an account with WordPress, even a free one. I sometimes have seen adverts on my site but only when I am not logged in. And then only two small square ones at the bottom. Haven’t had problems liking posts either but haven’t done much lately.

I don’t see ads either but I tend to read on my computer. I have free site too. I had had problems this morning seeing a comment that I knew was there because I had an email notification. I managed to reply to it by going onto my own blog and replying rather than trying to reply in notifications. I downloaded the new app onto my phone and I don’t like it, especially the notifications bit:)

I struggle to write comments and to like some posts and I have the free version. I know that other people have had problems liking and writing comments on my own posts because they have sent me messages via other means. It does seem a bit of a muddle. I had thought that sometimes my issues were due to either a slow internet connection….as where the like “tag/ button” should be it just says loading or that the iPad I use is old and slow….a bit like me. In fact that is the case with this, your current post…..I can comment but can’t like it.

Hi Sandra, I also have a free WP account, and I don’t see ads in the middle of your post or comments. However, I think this is because I’m logged in and read your posts in my Reader rather than clicking through from the email notification. I stay logged into to WP full time, and never have any trouble commenting on WP blogs. I can comment on Blogger posts too, but only using my gmail account ID – I don’t want to set up a Blogger ID, and it’s too hard to comment via WP. My Husband gets the ads if he reads my posts on his phone, but not if he uses his laptop. Go figure…. I think at some stage I’ll have to switch to a paying blog because I’ll run out of photo storage space, but for now I’m OK because I make sure I downsize all my images to save space. I’m not sure if this has been of any help, hope there’s something useful in there.

So far it seems that only people who are following on email, rather than from another blog, and reading posts on their phones, are getting all the ads.

When the email comes through from you, I get the message attached to the bottom which reads this post is ad supported. At the moment you are advertising wikepedia. There are no ads within the text here on your actual site. I have a free site but limited storage for photos , so I have had to delete all my early posts and pictures- nearly four years worth now. That’s why I started the new site for the stitchbook, because I knew it would be photo heavy. When I try to like posts sometimes I think I have an isssue but if I wait long enough the like has worked. I have problems with sites which only allow comments via a Google account which I don’t have and don’t want. Good luck sorting out the issue.

I have issues commenting, as you know I am on Blogger and I think that is a lot of the issue. The two platforms do not speak to each other. As long as I keep myself logged in to my defunct WP account now I can comment easily, but I daren’t try with my Blogger account or it goes to you know where in a handbasket! I do see some adverts, mostly at the bottom of the page.
An aside, as today is Candlemas, I think I need to go look at the weather.

Thanks Deb. I have trouble commenting on Blogger and Typepad. In this era of commuication, you think they would have sorted that out wouldn’t you.
The ads at the bottom are usually pretty unobtrusive (hopefully) and there because it is a free site – I’m ok with that, but on some sites they appear all over the place and mine looked as if it was going that way when I was trying to log in earlier.
This time of year is Imbolc for us heathens! A great time for planning new projects and sowing seeds both real and metaphorical.

I can’t see any adverts, I pay the basic amount so I don’t have adverts and it did give you extra storage. My main gripe now with wordpress is that you can no longer buy extra storage for photos etc, they just want you to do a business plan which is way out of what I’m prepared to pay for a hobby. The helpdesk are actually very helpful if you send them a message.

I am really glad you are not seeing loads of ads. When I write a post I am asked if WordPress can take up storage on my computer. I contacted WordPress and was told it was an issue with my Server – Safari, and not with WordPress.
I have found the WordPress ‘Help’ very helpful and the Forums – although sometimes I struggle to understand the answers! – all very technical.

I was going to write something in my next post, so I am glad you have mentioned it too! Yes, I have had problems liking other wordpress sites, but only those that have a supreme domain, i.e. those without wordpress in their address. And each time I wanted to answer a comment on my own blog I had to log in anew. I solved that part of the problem by switching my priority domain back to the wordpress address (I pay for wordsandherbs.com without the wordpress bit in the address, but am beginning to wonder why!)
I can‘t see any adverts on your site Sandra, and I hope someone else will come up with an answer!

Thank you so much for your comment Cathy. Every so often WordPress goes a bit weird while they make changes, but it usually sttles down within a week. I have to keep logging to my own site afresh as well – so annoying!
It is a comfort to know that I’m not the only one expereincing this and I am very pleased to know that you are not being bombarded with ads. Let’s hope normal service is resumed shortly.
