In a Vase on Monday: Garrya Elliptica

Garrya Elliptica and Cerinthe

Garrya Elliptica is such an elegant shrub and I have put it with some over-wintering cerinthe in a pottery vase bought about 45 years ago from Honiton Pottery in Devon.

The little blue square pot is a vase from ChiveΒ and it sits on a piece of burnt wood I found on the beach. I have scrubbed it and waxed it and to me it is a fine piece of sculpture.

    • It seems to be having a good year. Yes, you would make excellent use of Garrya in your arrangements I’m sure Alison. I suppose there must be different varieties – mine was planted here by the previous owner.

  6. What a fabulous display. Sadly I kill most plants that come my way 😣

  8. I have always admired garrya too but haven’t considered having it in the garden as I don’t think I have the space for it anywhere – as everyone says, it is so elegant and makes a delightful vase on Monday. You can guess that I love the Chive pot and your bit of driftwood too – quirky vases are just up my street as well!

  9. Garrya Elliptica is just one of those shrubs that demands attention this time of the year. It looks very fine in that elegant jug, as for that chuck of wood, a real treasure.

  10. All right. This gets a wowsah! Especially the burnt driftwood. I swear you have more creativity in your little finger than most people do in their whole bodies.

  12. The Garrya Elliptica is so pretty. I think I have seen it around but never knew what it was called. Your burnt wood ‘sculpture’ is also very attractive. You do find such amazing things and have quite a collection of vases. So useful for these posts.

  14. That is a lovely shrub and one I haven’t seen before. The piece of burnt driftwood makes a lovely sculpture and base for a small vase. What a creative lady!
