Walking by Water

Weymouth Beach

I am trying to fit more exercise in amongst all the crafting – anyone else in the same boat? I needed some motivation to prise me away from the allure of the needles, threads and yarns.

So I started a Facebook Group inviting Facebook friends, wherever they are in the world to join me. If one of us is going for a walk, we post it on Facebook and ask if anyone can join us on that day. It doesn’t have to be at the same time, just the same day. Afterwards we post our photos in our FB group to share our walks.IMG_8358

And it is working! I would never have gone out in the bitter wind and pelting rain if I hadn’t said I would join a friend in Australia and a friend in Yorkshire. Head down into the driving wind, I was imagining walking alongside my friend in Oz under blue skies, and my friend in Yorkshire, skipping through a sprinkling of snow.

Wishing Well

Then I went to pick up a friend and we went to Upwey Wishing WellIMG_8368

and had a wander round the delightful watery gardensIMG_8369 before the reward of a delicious Cream TeaIMG_8373

Mmmmmmmm!

Have you been out and about this week?

I walk every day with the dogs but have to make my own cream tea when I get back if I want one! Your walk looks lovely and the gardens are beautiful.

  2. What a lovely idea this is Sandra – I do enjoy going on walks but am already very diligent with my exercise regime in terms of swimming and exercise classes otherwise I would have worked out ways to join you even though I don’t ‘do’ Facebook

    • Nice thought.
I find it easier in better weather as gardening keeps me fairly active, but with relentless wind and rain, I haven’t really done anything out there yet, the ground is completely sodden.

  3. Tomorrow I am going out for a long walk, without Max, so I actually get further than the end of the block!

  4. I’m not on FaceBook or Instagram or any of that, so I’d never know when you were heading out, or what the idea was… 😦 But I can share a walk by water we did yesterday, which would have been on the same day. It’s in Mouse’s latest travelogue on my blog. Swimming Creek Beach is in Nambucca Heads, northern New South Wales, Australia, and it’s a leash-free dog beach, so Mouse took us for a spot of exercise. Lots of empty beach, crashing surf and slightly overcast (though not at all cold) weather. Many, many happy doggos and their owners, digging, splashing, swimming and retrieving. Doggos, not owners….

  5. Our Oz skies are very grey in Melbourne, still out with Maggie twice already today. You could double the scones and cream if you get an Afghan Hound Sandra. That machinery on the beach looks ominous .

  6. It is a super idea and I would join in but I’m not on fb, just instagram. Since leaving my house to stay with my daughter I have been walking much more than normal – and I walk every morning out of habit and a shorter amble around the block in the evening….. I have enjoyed it so much I’m going to keep the long walks on the high road (that’s my name for the area I’m now walking) going even when I get back home. I’m also step counting via an app on my phone I didn’t know I had til the daughter told me and that is quite encouraging too. I think its really important just to be outside for a part of the day, no matter the weather, loving nature. And it helps keep us healthy as we age too. So consider me with you even though I’m not posting 🙂

  7. I can’t help thinking that a cream tea might cancel out the exercise but – clotted cream!

  8. That cream tea does look luscious! Great idea to share walks with Facebook friends from around the world. I love those water gardens. Enchanting! I took a walk on Sunday and photographed trees with various buds and cones against a bright blue sky.

  9. What a great idea. I have not been out walking but I did take a very scenic drive followed by a lovely Sunday lunch.

  10. I definitely need to do more walking. But when it’s cold and miserable outside the fire and my crochet seem very inviting. I too need the encouragement from someone else to get out and get doing. The FB walk is a great idea!

  13. what a delightful end to a lovely walk – a cream tea! Is that clotted cream I see there?
Yes, we crafters do need to try and do a bit more walking. That’s one of the reasons we have a dog – it makes me go out for walks with him every day, whatever the weather, but some days it’s just a couple of quick walks on the lead.

    • Yes that is clotted cream – and I only had about half of it (and just a tiny bit of jam) but oooooh what a delicious treat.
I see the dog walkers out in all weathers and in the dark with head torches and I feel glad I don’t have a dog! I used to though and I do miss having animals around.

  14. I presume you aren’t walking to lose weight. 😉 that cream tea looks delicious. My latest way of getting in more walking is playing “Wizards Unite” and it is almost social in that my daughter and family play it too and we get to send each other things.

      • It’s a game based on the Harry Potter stories. By the same people who created Pokemon Go if you’ve heard of that.

        • I just looked it up and watched a trailer for it but could not understand how you play the game. I suppose you have to Download the App onto your phone … and then what?

          • It’s quite complicated in a way and it took me a while to get into it but there’s lots of help online. You need a phone with GPS and data. You download the app and create an identity. Then you are presented with a map and you the wizard on the map. (A real map of wherever you are.) And you see things in the air that you click on that give rise to you having to cast a spell to rescue something. You cast spells by tracing the glyph shown on the screen. There are also potion ingredients you can pick up and seed packets and water to grow things. There are also real places shown on the map as Inns where you can ‘dine’ to get more spell energy and greenhouses where you can grow things and fortresses where you have to fight things.
It works most;y like am RPG with leveling up as you do more. You have a daily set of tasks which means getting out and about and also special events for certain days and weeks. You can also play it indoors in terms of rescuing things and brewing potions. If you have ‘friends’ you can send them gifts of spell energy, ingredients and rune stones. These have pictures of the places where you found them.
I’ve had a look on the World Map and it doesn’t look as if there are any Inns, Greenhouses or Fortresses near where you live. A few in Weymouth and Dorchester. There are loads in Southampton.
Not everything about the game but gives you a general idea.
