Back in February, I took Miss E on a ‘school trip’, mainly to see the exhibition of Sophie Ryder wire sculptures,

but the day held so much more….

Miss E immediately engaged with the huge beings

in both a thoughtful and playful way

…..talking about how they might have been made and looking for the baby hare

….found it

She was fascinated by the quirky things she found in the sculptures

and started making a collection of photos of ‘unusual things’.

Totally unprompted by me, she responded to many of the sculptures by adopting the same poses and then interacting with them … I could see she was not only seeing the forms, she was feeling them in her body and becoming part of them.

She danced with the dancing hares…

and stood strong under the ‘clasped hands’. This structure was originally over the path but had to be moved as people were bumping into it whilst walking, heads down, texting on their mobile phones!

Inside the cathedral Miss E talked about the scale of the huge sculptures and marvelled at the scale of the cathedral, again wondering about how it had been constructed,

noticing the richness of its history and the patterns and shapes.

Taking time for personal REFLECTION

We had such an enriching day together, and only just made it back in time for Miss E to get to her gymnastics class.

Japan. Day Two 5: Crazy Cats and a Hare in High Heels

……I am so enjoying sharing with you my trip to Japan, here’s the next instalment ……

After the Craft Centre we were back in the coach seeing the imposing modern architecture go by

till we got to the  Amuse Museum

There were many wonderful displays in this Museum, but the exhibition that captured my attention was one of whacky, glitzy, fun paintings by Kaneda Hanaki. I just LOVE them.

I didn’t quite know what to think of them at first, I don’t usually go for paintings with animals

but those grumpy cats got me and wouldn’t let me go!

I’m so glad I took so many photos because the more I look at them the more I like them – they are fun

and ridiculous

and funny

and crazy

and I felt a little uncomfortable at the time taking all those photos without buying something, but back then I had not really got to the point of loving them enough to take that step. Going through the photos again now, I realise how they have stayed with me and might well inspire some textile work in the future.

This is the one I particularly likeThere is something about a hare in high heels! And it is so obviously Japanese as they are both wearing kimonos, and then there is the glitter! Oh I do SO love it.

Writing this post inspired me to email the Museum and ask if this one is still for sale. They got back to me and it is!!!!!

They have spoken to the artist and she will send it to me – I’m very excited! And I am so pleased to be supporting this fabulously talented artist. I’m hoping they will send me some information about her and her work. I’d really like to know the stories behind the paintings.

Encouraged by Denis (see his comment in the last post) I just had to have a go at a 3/5/3 haiku:

the two sentences working like this –

hare stares back when captured in paint

when captured in paint wildlife tamed

‘Tamed’ isn’t quite what I mean, but I can’t get a word that suggests we can now spend as long as we like looking at a normally elusive creature.

Any suggestions?

She has just tentatively started to exhibit and sell her paintings, limited edition prints and cards at this local exhibition and an art gallery.
